I noticed the plants I lived with every day had such elegance in their decay. Time would soon nudge them out of the way, as next years shoots pushed through. Apart from holding their seeds, these flowers or stems had no useful function. Yet they retained their beauty and their dignity. So I gathered these plants from places special to me, left some to dry, decay and drop in forgotten vases. I then photographed the shapes in their moribund form. Issue #11

Utopia

Harry Pearce from Pentagram came to Richard with an idea for a short film which would work alongside a poster he created titled ‘Chances are…’. The poster is for a major exhibition and collaboration between the Goethe-Institut Israel and the David Ben Ari Museum in Bat Yam, Israel. Entitled ‘The art of Utopia’ the exhibition explores the relevance of Utopian ideals in contemporary society and contemplates their potential to spark hope amid the upheaval of 2017. Pearce created ‘Chances are…’, by dropping six letterforms that comprise the word ‘Utopia’, from a height of 1 metre, 55 times. It was great to document the creative idea of the poster as a moving image.

‘It’s All Our Blood’

A collaboration with Harry Pearce of Pentagram to shoot the poster for the ‘Questioning the Bomb’ exhibition. The exhibition marks 70 years since the twin nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, opening in Maryland later this year. The poster, entitled ‘It’s All Our Blood’, featured Harry’s own blood. A creative direction made by himself, creating a dramatic and thought provoking image.

A Shot from Wallpaper* last month for their Mexico issue. We loved shooting this Freida kahlo inspired set with its bright and vibrant colours. The whole shoot was shot on Polaroid with acid washed negatives which, created muted colours with a high grain.

This incredible copper bike, shot for Dunhill magazine, was custom built by 14 Bike Company. The copper frame naturally takes on an aged patina and tarnish. However to show the full glory of the copper we spent a good two hours polishing its every surface to a high sheen.

Christmas at De Beers

This shoot took some planning to become the serene shot that is now in Vogue and other magazines around the world.
Our ice expert created real snow flakes to form on roses and firs by leaving countless cups of boiling water in a freezer tank to evaporate. Each scene and flower had to be frozen up to ten days in advance. We then shot the pre-frozen jewellery in a walk in freezer.
All worth the effort to find the look that the De Beers team love for Christmas.

The first bottle of whisky to hit six figures, and only three bottles have ever been made. We went through a few concepts from smoke to liquid and came out with this highly reflective shot. It was a beautiful bottle to shoot, as all the graphics were made of solid silver and the bottle itself was handblown from crystal.
